It has been a busy couple of months, little time to keep up with the diary, so here are a few highlights of the summer just to keep you in the picture.
The Sunday Morning Summer Market at Cunault has been revived after 20 years and features a guest wine maker each week, offering tastings by the riverside. The tabac, the hangout for all the locals, is the hub of the market where you can sip a glass of chilled rose between buying fresh cheeses, oysters, oils, jams, beers, sausages and seasonal vegetables. Perfect for a riverside picnic.
The last weekend in July is when boys with their toys skid around the village circuit of Le Puy Notre Dame as it becomes a race track. Old Bugattis Amilcars, Morgans and motor bikes with sidecars are just some of the entrants. The wine flows and the smell of bbq'd saussisons fills the air. An event not to be missed.
A month when the now annual "Straw House Players" Summer Production hits the garden stage at Plantagent Plantes and provides a welcome break from the chores. Here is Frank in the Oliver Twist scene - you’ve got to pick a pocket or two.
A month with a party on the pigeon tower high up in the tree tops! Great place to celebrate David’s birthday! SANTE!!
A month when La Grande Maison Cuvee 2007 is in the bottle and ready to drink.....
...but we seem to end up being given lots of other bottles of Saumur Champigny too.
A month when the vines around La Grande Maison are starting to hang heavy with their grapes whilst the other fields are full of roses and sunflowers. A beautiful sunny month of colour and smiles.
A month with evenings of hot air ballons making their flights high across the vineyards and the rooves of La Grande Maison.
......and dogs get to swim in the river.
A month with beautiful sunsets over the Loire River.
......and when the more private chateaux that are normally closed open their doors. Such as Chateau du Boumois near Saumur.
Not a bad couple of months really and with the Fete de Coteaux du Layon in Aubigne Sur Layon on last Sunday of August plenty more festivites to come.
