A few images from round and about the local area during the summer months.
The Grande Table of Saumur Champigny. Held in the town square of Saumur in front of the Hotel de Ville. This is a record breaking attempt to seat the maximum number of people for "diner" all on one continuous table. Great fun and the Saumur Champigny wine producers offer a blend of their wine. Simply purchase a glass (it's yours to keep) and visit the various producers around the square who will keep it topped up and entertain you with music at different locations around the town square.
Have you ever heard of an Oenographist? Well you have now - this chap paints in wine but not any old wine it must be wine he enjoys as of course a little drop as you paint is always welcome. He painted our picture of the Saumur Chateau vineyards that you will see in the hall of La Grande Maison in Clos Cristal Wine 2005 kindly given to us by Celine and Eric the winemakers at Clos Cristal.
A event not to be missed coming up in September. Every year we look forward to the Wine Market of Saumur Wine. This year on the 1st/2nd September this is an ideal opportunity to try wines from all of the main Saumur producers. Another chance to purchase a souvenir glass and visit the stands to taste each of the Saumur AOC'S (appellation origine controlle) dry whites, sweet whites, reds oaked and un-oaked, sparkling and roses. A chance to meet the vignerons (winemakers) and buy the wines at vineyard prices.
Don't forget to take the fabulous tour of the caves of Bouvet Ladubay . Jessica and Emilie will then assist you in guiding you though the tasting. Have you ever tried red sparkling wine? Well now is the opportunity - perfect with chocolate or strawberries!
The church of Notre Dame des Ardilliers in Saumur is well worth a visit. The imposing cupolla entrance leads to this magnificent altar with beautiful smaller chapels on each side of the nave. The marble altarpiece gives one the impression you are in Italy rather than France!
