Cave Restos & Guinguettes

Cave Restaurants & Traditional Loire Guinguettes

Your first visit to the Loire Valley should include at least a visit to one of the regions famous cave restaurants. Not for the fine dining but just for the fun of it! Set menus include for example   :

Assiette de la Cave :

Galipette* farcie aux rillettes

Flamme angevine* aux oignons et lardons

Pleurotes*ou shii-takés* à la crème (selon récolte), le tout servi avec Salade verte

Les Fouées chaudes

Accompagnées de :

Beurre salé, Rillettes du pays - Champignons, Haricots blancs - Saucisse d’Anjou

Fromage doré au four - Dessert de saison - Café

Vin compris  (All the wine you can drink) All for about 22 euros p.p.

Les Caves de Genevraie Montreuil Bellay 15 minutes - Traditional cave restaurant with set menu that includes wine. Serves fouace, rillettes, goats cheese, cassoulet. Should be tried once for the experience whilst in the Loire.

La Grange au Dime Montreuil Bellay 15 minutes - Traditional cave restaurant with set menu that includes wine. Serves fouace, rillettes, goats cheese, cassoulet.

Caves Rou Marson - Rou 15 minutes Traditional restaurant with set menu that includes wine. Serves fouace, rillettes, goats cheese, cassoulet.

Caves aux Moines - Treves 20 minutes - Traditional restaurant with set menu that includes wine. Serves fouace, rillettes, goats cheese, cassoulet.

L’Helianthe Turquant 30 minutes - Probably the most sophisticated of this type of cave restaurant. More choice and advisable to book.

For those who like me like  waterside dining then a traditional Guinguette is a must. The food is not the main consideration here it's more about location.

Le Futreau  Guinguette 20 minutes Chenehutte Treves Good menu and traditional french desserts.

L'Estaminet Guinguette Le Thoureil 30 minutes- Homemade tarts and desserts with local wines from the Caves de Vignerons. Good place for a drink whilst watching the river flow by.

Route de Sel - Guinguette Le Thoureil 30 minutes- A favourite boating cafe and bar with sun terrace that looks onto the Loire. A good stop at anytime for a verre or great for a casual lunch, salads, omlette frite, bavette etc.

Le P’tite Guinguette Gennes 25 mins - No website but a 3 course fab meal in a traditional bistrot setting for 12 euros makes this definitely worth a visit (lunchtime on Monday - Friday and Friday evening) Not on the river but the food is good and excellent value!
